Keeping Grad. School Debt Down

Q:  I am currently a Doctor of Psychology student going in my second year. I would like to know how can I reduce my debt while I am in school because I am already 42 years old. I don’t want to end with a large debt.

A:  There are just two ways to keep educational debts down.  One is to win some form of scholarship/fellowship.  The other is to work while you study.  I wonder if it’s possible for you to teach courses at the university in which you’re enrolled, or to practice some form of counseling with your current credential.  Of course, it’s important not to let work or teaching diminish your academic performance.

Debt incurred in earning a good graduate education isn’t an entirely bad thing.  The key is not to incur too much debt and to know that you have good career prospects.  Be sure that your school has a good track record of placing graduates in the kind of jobs you want.  Also, compare the salary you’re likely to make with your projected student loan payments.  As a rule of thumb, you should be very cautious about incurring educational debts that exceed your projected annual salary.
